My boyfriend is in the army serving the duty which every Korean male has to do. The army base is near Jihaeng, Dongducheon so I go there a lot to see him. Almost once a week. It has been almost one and a half years that I have visited him in Jihaeng and I found out that there are so many foreigners (mostly foreign soldiers working in the American army base in Dongducheon) there as well.
I have decided to make a list of some restaurants that I have tried in Jihaeng so far. If you are looking for a restaurant in Jihaeng 🙂 Here we go!
1. Yukggojip (육꼬집)
There are quite a lot of Korean BBQ restaurants in Jihaeng and my favorite is Yukggojip. Their meat is delicious and you can see a fire show as they make it. Every table here has a huge iron grill and it has so much space that you can grill meat, Kimchi, and other vegetables at the same time.
When you order, you first choose which meat you want to eat and then two side dishes out of six which are Kimchi stew (김치찌개), Doenjang stew (된장찌개), steamed egg (계란찜), butter corn (버터콘), stir-fried squid (불오징어볶음), and grilled cheese (시크릿치즈구이). What I chose were butter corn and Kimchi stew. The heart-shaped egg fry is given to every table which a server makes nicely 🙂
After eating Korean BBQ, Bokkeumbab (볶음밥; fried rice) always comes. It is always the best! After eating meat, people usually order a half portion for a person. For example, if you are with one friend, then you would order one portion of Bokkeumbab. If you are with two other friends, you can’t order one and a half portions, so just order two. It is just an example. It’s up to you 😉
Price: Pork meat- around 10,000 KRW for one portion (It depends on which part you eat)/ Two side dishes – 3,000 KRW / Bokkeumbab – around 2,500 KRW for one portion
Address: 경기 동두천시 중앙로 110-9 (110-9, Jungang-ro, Dongducheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, Korea)

2. Misoya (미소야)
Everyone loves Donkatsu and I do too! There are not many Donkatsu restaurants in Jihaeng. I haven’t tried all of them so can’t compare with others in the city but this tasted fine. The basic Donkatsu like the one in the first picture above was good but not the one in the second picture. I would say to go for the basic ones.
Compared to other Donkatsu restaurants in other cities, this is just okay, but it’s fine in Jihaeng. You can order just Donkatsu or a Donkatsu set meal which includes rice, Udon, and Sushi.
Price: Donkatsu set meal – around 11,000 KRW/ Donkatsu itself – around 8,000 KRW
Address: 경기도 동두천시 중앙로 126 생연프라자 1층 (126, Jungang-ro, Dongducheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, Korea)

3. Jipshin Maeun Galbijjim (짚신매운갈비찜)
If you fell in love with spicy food, this is the place you need to go. It has spicy braised pork/beef. You can choose either pork or beef and the level of spiciness. The medium is 50% which Koreans commonly choose. If you are confident in eating spicy food, try 50% or 70% but over 70%. Over 70% would be too spicy.
I usually order the pork set meal which includes spicy braised pork, rice balls, and steamed egg. Steamed egg helps to reduce the spiciness 🙂
The server will cut the meat stuck to bones nicely into a bite size so that you can easily eat. I love the soybean sprouts in it. After eating the meat, you can order Bokkeumbab which can’t be missed. Spicy food lovers, you should try this.
Price: Pork set for two people (including the meat, rice balls, and steamed egg) – 23,000 KRW / Beef set – 32,000 KRW
Address: 경기 동두천시 중앙로 110-23 삼성프라자 1층 (110-23, Jungang-ro, Dongducheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, Korea)

4. Gajang Ma-sit-neun Jokbal (가장맛있는족발)
If you want to try Jokbal, this place is the best for you. I have tried a couple of Jokbal restaurants in Jihaeng and I like this one the most. I usually order half normal Jokbal and half spicy Jokbal. The meat is well-balanced between the fat and the lean meat and it is soft. The Spicy Jokbal is not so spicy that you can’t eat it, but just spicy enough. I would say “deliciously spicy.” It could be too spicy for foreigners though.
If you haven’t tried Jokbal, click the link to see my video talking about Jokbal 🙂 I explained four different ways to eat it.
Price: Normal Jokbal – around 30,000 KRW / Half half Jokbal – 34,000 KRW for the portion like the one in the picture above.
Address: 경기 동두천시 지행로 61 한승빌딩 1층 (61, Jihaeng-ro, Dongducheon-si, Gyeonggi-do)

5. Kwang-eo-eui Jeonseol (광어의전설)
This restaurant has Sashimi for a good price but does not give you side dishes (besides lettuce and sauces) or sell drinks. Instead, you need to buy drinks from the store next to the restaurant. The restaurant does not look good and have servers, but you need to serve yourself.
The fish here is fresh and delicious. I can see that they focus more on the quality of the fish than on how the restaurant looks like and how many servers and side dishes there are. That is why they can serve you fresh fish with a good price.
Price: Two flatfish – 15,000 KRW / Flatfish + Squid – 20,000 KRW / Flatfish + Rockfish – 25,000 KRW
Address: 경기도 동두천시 지행로 12 (12, Jihaeng-ro, Dongducheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, Korea)

6. Chun-cheon-gol Dakgalbi (춘천골 닭갈비)
There are many Dakgalbi restaurants in Jihaeng. This restaurant is not highly recommended. The taste of Dakgalbi is fine but not super delicious. You can try it here or in other Dakgalbi restaurants. I will attach the addresses.
Price: 10,000 KRW for one person
Address: 경기도 동두천시 지행동 719-1 계림프라자 1층 (719-1, Jihaeng-dong, Dongducheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, Korea)
Other Dakgalbi restaurants: Dak-yi-bong Dakgalbi (경기 동두천시 지행로 50; 50, Jihaeng-ro, Dongducheon-si, Gyeonggi-do) / Hyeong-Je-Mul Dakgalbi (경기 동두천시 거북마루로 24; 24, Geobungmaru-ro, Dongducheon-si, Gyeonggi-do)
7. Jjambbong Sang-hoe (짬뽕상회)
Korean-Chinese food is always a good choice 🙂 This restaurant has good Jjambbong, spicy seafood noodle soup. You will enjoy eating a lot of seafood in the soup. You can choose the spiciness between the normal and the more spicy. Tangsuyuk, fried pork, is delicious too. The sauce is sweet and sour.
Other than Jjambbong and Tangsuyuk, they have so many various dishes. You should try it here!
Price: Jjambbong – around 6,000 KRW / Tangsuyuk – 7,000 KRW (small; what I ordered), 13,000 KRW(medium), 20,000 KRW (large)
Address: 경기도 동두천시 중앙로 134-20 2층 (2nd floor, 134-20, Jungang-ro, Dongducheon-si, Gyeonggi-do)

8. Jerrys (제리스)
Jihaeng has so many cafes and most of them are franchises. Jerry is a small cafe which has various types of cakes. It also sells different types of desserts like Bingsu (Korean shaved ice) and macarons. They are confident in using healthy, organic ingredients.
Price: a piece of cake – around 4,500 KRW / Americano 3,000 KRW
Address: 경기 동두천시 중앙로 110-13 개림프라자 1층 (110-13, Jungang-ro, Dongducheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, Korea)
