Hamburg steak in Korea?!

Hamburg steak isn’t actually from Korea but it has been Koreanized here and many people love it. How different is it? Let’s find out!

  1. Koreans eat it with cooked rice.

The staple food for Koreans is rice. We eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (It has been changing in the young generations to eating Western foods more often). We eat it with Bulgogi (a beef dish marinated with soy sauce) and Korean beef BBQ as well as with Hamburg steak.

2. Koreans eat it with Kimchi.

Oh, Kimchi can’t be missed in any meal in Korea. I would say that Kimchi is also a staple food along with rice. I personally love eating steak with Kimchi. Don’t laugh at me because a lot of Koreans would be the same haha.

3. Koreans place it in a Korean earthen pot called Ttukbaegi.

Not every Hamburg steak restaurant places it in Ttukbaegi, but some places do because the pot keeps it warm. When you get the steak at first, you will see the sauce boiling because of the heat from the pot. The temperature slowly goes down.


I found one Hamburg restaurant which meets all three features above. The name of the restaurant is 경성함바그 (Kyeong Seong Hamburg) located in various locations throughout the country. Kyeongseong was the name for Seoul in around the 1900s.


I can see that the interior design looks like the old Seoul style I saw in the movies. (Of course it is fancier and more trendy, but it has the feeling of the old Seoul).


I ordered two hamburg steaks; one is the basic Kyeong Seong hamburg and the other is Deonjang hamburg. Deonjang is Korean soy bean paste. As you see, it comes with rice and Kimchi, and is placed in the Korean earthen pot. You can see the sauce boiling without fire in the second picture.


Hamburg steak is not as big as I thought. Oh well, you can add the steak with 4,500KRW. The sauce for the basic hamburg steak is made with Demi-glace sauce, tomatoes, red wine, and garlic. Anyone would enjoy this.

Doenjang hamburg steak is more soupy and has a light smell of Doenjang. It has Doenjang, eggs, garlic, Asian leeks, and radishes in it. I would say it is quite spicy. It was even spicy for me. If you would like to try Korean fusion hamburg steak, it would be a good choice. If not, go for the original one.

What Izakaya in Korea looks like

“Izakaya: Japanese gastropub which serves delicious Japanese food and drinks.”

Since a few years ago, there has been a boom in the Izakaya market and there are Izakaya restaurants everywhere in Korea now. It has become a place where you go after work to relieve all your stress by eating good food and drinking with your friends.

I don’t drink much but I go Izakaya in Korea often to try various types of delicious Japanese food 🙂

This is what Izakaya looks like: cherry blossom trees (of course fake lol), Japanese oil-paper umbrellas, and paintings. When you go in, you feel like you are in a pub in Japan.

We ordered four kinds of food and shared it together, which is a common way for Koreans to eat. The first dish we had was Hweh-deop-bap or Hoedeopbap (회덮밥). It is a mixture of steamed rice, vegetables, and sliced raw fish.

The sauce is Chojang which tastes spicy and sour. You mix all of them with chopsticks because they mix better than spoons, which press down the ingredients. All of them go well together 🙂

The next is chicken skewers plus grilled pineapple with cheese. Beer can’t be missed here. Beer and chicken are the best combination 🙂 All of them are lightly covered with sweet and salty soy sauce based sauce.

The next is Oden soup which has processed fishcake, boiled eggs, konjac, etc. It is considered a winter food but it doesn’t matter these days. I am not a huge fan of Oden but I love the soup. It warms your body 🙂 I would say that it is good for an appetizer as well. Oden soup in the picture above is for 3-4 people.

You take as much as you want in your bowl or serve others first as in the Korean manner.

My favorite was the various fried foods! I enjoyed eating all kinds: shrimp, mushroom, sweet potato, pumpkin, potato, chili pepper, etc. I loved ALL of them. Seriously. It’s so good. A must-try dish in Izakaya!

Mandu: Korean dumplings (만두)

Yoooo guys, sorry that I’ve been lazy these days! So here’s a treat for you. DELICIOUS Mandu! (well, it’s actually a treat for myself also, since I LOVE dumplings.)

Mandu is basically a Korean dumpling which has various chopped ingredients inside of the dumpling skin. Chinese also eat dumplings, but Korean dumplings look a little different and the biggest difference is in the dumpling skin. Korean ones have a much thinner skin than Chinese dumplings.

There are various kinds of dumplings depending on the ingredients and the way that they cook it. For ingredients, we have Kimchi and meat Mandu which are the most popular ones. You can steam, fry, and boil them. Making a dumpling soup with Mandu is also an option.

I had a Mandu feast yesterday. Literally Mandu feast. I had so much of it, I was stuffed. Seriously, these were so good! I brought 6 packs of Mandu home and had some for dinner. Yeah, I really do love Mandu.


1. Steamed meat Mandu (고기만두; Gogi mandu)

There are pork, cellophane noodles, cabbage, onions, tofu, Korean leek, and other vegetables inside of Mandu. Usually, other restaurants put pork fat too for the better taste but it is not good for digestion. This restaurant I went put pork and beef instead of pork fat which tastes better and is easier to digest.

It also had Shiitake mushrooms which are quite expensive so other restaurants wouldn’t normally put it in Mandu. This Mandu was truly a health food.


2. Steamed Kimchi Mandu (김치만두)

Kimchi Mandu has mainly Kimchi and some meat (usually pork; this Mandu had beef too). It’s spicy but not too spicy. My favorite is Kimchi Mandu, as most Koreans love it.

It tastes better when you put real Kimchi in Mandu but many restaurants just put seasoned cabbage, which is not fermented. Fermented Kimchi makes a better Mandu.


3. Steamed cream Mandu (크림만두)

You can’t see this Mandu anywhere but here. It has the mixture of carbonara spaghetti sauce, squids, and various vegetables inside. I don’t know if the cream sauce and squids go well. It is not my favorite but it’s good to try once.


4. Butter-fried Mandu (버터구이만두)

They are meat and Kimchi Mandu but butter-fried. It’s so savory! Butter and Kimchi go together better than I expected. The outside is crispy and the inside is soft.

All of the Mandu here are pretty big and the price is good. I found a nice restaurant!

Chueotang: mudfish soup

When I think of Chueotang, I think of two things: Ahjeossi (아저씨; men over 40s, based on my standard) and health food. Ahjeossis love to eat this soup and it gives you so much energy. It is made from mudfish. Let’s see what it looks like 🙂

I liked the side dishes here. Some restaurants buy Kimchi which doesn’t taste good, but I could taste that their Kimchi was made here and it was so fresh. Even by only eating side dishes, I felt like I was eating healthy food.

Here is Chueotang. What I tried had grounded mudfish, different types of vegetables, and abalones. (Usually abalones are not in the soup but what I ordered was Abalone Chueotang.) It is medium-thick, meaning it’s not too watery and not too thick because of the grounded mudfish.

Chueotang itself is considered a health food… and with abalones? I would say that it is a super food. Both are considered energy food in Korea. It is not that spicy. You might think that it tastes weird at first. I understand. It sounds weird too haha. But give it a try 🙂

It depends on the restaurants, but where I went prepared a nice Dolsot bap (돌솥밥; hot pot rice). It tastes better than just normal rice and you can eat Nurongjitang (누롱지탕; scorched rice soup). You scoop the rice into another bowl and pour water into the hot pot. Once you finish the rice, the Nurungjitang will be cooked and you can enjoy it 🙂

5 Popular Korean Chinese Food

Koreans often enjoy eating Koreanized Chinese food like Jjajangmyeon (짜장면) and Jjambbong (짬뽕). Here, I will introduce you to the best five popular Korean Chinese foods. While you can go to a restaurant and eat, many people use delivery for these foods. There are tons of Korean Chinese food restaurants.

1. Jja-jang-myeon (짜장면)

It is noodles with Chunjang sauce made from black soybeans and other ingredients like pork and vegetables. Usually the noodles are made by machine, but sometimes you can find noodles pulled by hand.

Some restaurants cut ingredients very small and make the sauce like the one in the picture above, while others cut them into a bite size. I like the former because the noodles and the sauce go along well.

Before eating, you mix the sauce on top and the noodles in the bottom well with chopsticks. (I have explained several times about how to mix them with chopsticks but again, one chopstick in the left hand and the other on the right and lift the noodles several times). Yellow pickled radish always comes as a side dish.

2. Jjam-ppong (짬뽕)

Jjamppong is also a noodle dish, but it’s a spicy soup with lots of seafood. The picture above might look weird to some of you. Koreans, however, think that it is awesome because they give you one whole small octopus, which gives you the impression of generosity and plenty-ness.

The spiciness level depends on the restaurant and you can usually ask for less or more spicy ones. It doesn’t have a proper way to eat it. You can eat noodles first, soup first, or seafood first. It’s totally up to you. I like to eat seafood first and then noodles.

3. Tang-su-yuk (탕수육)

Tangsuyuk is my favorite! It’s fried pork with sweet and sour sauce. Ah, I am craving for this now. Unlike the first two dishes above, you share this with others. For example, each of two people will order Jjajangmyeon or Jjambbong and one Tangsuyuk to share.

It is the best when you eat the meat with other vegetables like onions, mushrooms, and carrots. (It is just me, though. It could depend on your preferences.) The good, delicious Tangsuyuk is made with tender meat and softly fry. If it is over-fried, it will get hard.

4. Gochu-Japchae (고추잡채)

Gochu-Japchae is stir-fried pork and cut vegetables like green and red bell peppers, mushrooms, and onions with chili oil. It’s only a little spicy even though it looks more spicy. I just love how all these ingredients go along well and dance in my mouth 🙂 Yeah, I like the texture of this.

It comes with white bread called Kkot-ppang (꽃빵) which doesn’t really have a taste. Since Gochu-Japchae is salty, it tastes good when eating it with tasteless Kkotppang. You also share this with others.

Kkanpunggi is spicy garlic fried chicken but what I tried was Kkanpung Saewoo (깐풍새우; spicy garlic fried shrimps). The sauce is the same but just the ingredients are different. It is spicy, sweet, and sour at the same time. The garlic doesn’t taste strong, but it’s enjoyable.

Even though the shrimp are fried, it is not crispy because of the sauce that coats it. It is more soft. It tastes like sweet and sour chicken in Panda Express in America. So delicious!

10 Best Incheon Chinatown Food (Street Food)

You might have heard of Incheon if you have come to Korea because it has the largest international airport in Korea. It has quite a lot of attractions, including many different islands, and one of them is Incheon Chinatown.

Incheon Chinatown is well-known for its various types of food including street food. I made a list of the food that I tried there. Enjoy 🙂 Oh and the Korean version is here.


 1. Mandu (만두)

It is a must-try in Chinatown. You can find different styles of Mandu (Dumplings) like steamed, boiled, fried, etc. The interesting thing is that their dumplings have juice inside which makes the Mandu moist.

There are many Mandu restaurants but I recommend two. One is Wonbo (원보) and the other is DaDaBok (다다복). I will attach the addresses below. Remember they are closed at around 7 pm.

It is a Chinese bread filled with either red bean paste, cream cheese, or mango creme. I got the cream cheese one and it is so delicious! The bread is so soft and warm. It is like a different version of Bungeoppang (붕어빵; Korean fish-shaped pastry)

Chinese enjoy eating lamb skewers with beer. You can easily see lamb skewer vendors in the street. They grill it for a minute or two and then serve you. You dip it into the salty magic powder and eat it. If you don’t cook lamb well, it smells, but these were well-cooked 🙂

It is more like Japanese food than Chinese. I would say that it is a bigger version of Tacoyaki (타코야키; octopus balls). It has three types: octopus, bacon, and shrimp. I got a shrimp one. Between the two pieces of bread, it has shrimp, cabbage, and fried egg inside. Oh my goodness. The sauce and the ingredients go so well!

5. Mooncake (월병; Wolbyeong)

I stayed in China for about 7 months for an internship, and one of my all time favorite Chinese food is mooncake. I just love the combination of sweet red bean paste and salty egg yolk. Incheon Chinatown also has many mooncake shops and street vendors and I recommend you to buy it in a shop, not from a street vendor.

I asked a street vendor if their mooncakes have egg yolk inside and he told me that I wouldn’t be able to find those here in Chinatown. Well, I found them in a mooncake shop. They have over 15 kinds of mooncakes.

It didn’t taste as good as the ones that I tried in China, but I was glad that I could eat mooncakes again in Korea. Original Chinese mooncakes are much more moist and the saltiness of the yolk is stronger.

It is Taiwanese pineapple cake. It is yellow and has a kind of pineapple jam inside. It tastes sweet 🙂 I felt like the pineapple cakes that I tried before from Taiwan tasted better, but it could be just me.

These are fruit skewers coated with sugar syrup. One type is only strawberries and grapes and the other type is tomato, orange, and grapes. I recommend the first one 🙂 It is sweet and it makes a good dessert.

8. Petit Waffle (쁘띠 와플)

It is a small bite-size waffle. Depending on the dipping, it has various types like cream+nutella, cream+bluberry jam, cream+cream cheese, etc. I got the nutella one. I wish the waffles would be a little more moist. You can share one with two or three people.

The best egg tarts I have ever tried were from Hong Kong and Macau. But I found the same quality of egg tarts in the Incheon Chinatown food street. The pastry is amazing and the egg part is soft. Super delish 🙂 You should try this!

The best Korean Gukbap: soup with rice

Gukbap is a big category of Korean food. It includes every kind of soup with rice inside. There are many kinds like Kongnamul Gukbap (콩나물국밥; soybean sprouts gukbap), Doeji Gukbap (돼지국밥; pork gukbap), Seonji Gukbap (선지국밥; Ox blood gukbap) and more.

What I had was Soondae Gukbap (순대국밥). First of all, you need to know what Soondae is. It is pig intestines stuffed with various ingredients. It is a kind of blood sausage. Soondae Gukbap has pork meat, Soondae, and rice in the soup.

There are not many side dishes, only like two or three, and Gukbap is served in a Ddukbaegi (뚝배기; earthen pot) which keeps boiling. It always comes as a one person portion and it’s comparably cheap. Since the price is good and it doesn’t take long to be served, Gukbap is the best menu for drivers and office workers who have limited lunch time.

The original Soondae gukbap is not spicy but you can choose to put a little bit of seasoned red pepper sauce in it if you’d like. It has thin cut pork and Soondae. The soup is super rich and warm so it makes your body warm too 🙂

Soondae in the soup looks like this. I ordered a different type of Gukbap which was spicy. It was truly spicy. Like.. too spicy. I guess they put tons of spicy small chili peppers. The spiciness level of the spicy Gukbap will be different from restaurant to restaurant, but I recommend you to try the original one.

Most Soondae Gukbap places have this kind of dish with pork and Soondae. You just dip them into salted shrimp sauce and eat it. Oh my goodness. Soondae here is so delicious. I have never tried Soondae like this before. The outer part is usually tough so that you need to chew quite a lot, but the Soondae here is so soft.

Everyone should try Soondae here in The Jincook (더진국). It is a franchise which has lots of franchises in Seoul and other cities in Korea.

8 top Dongducheon Jihaeng restaurants

My boyfriend is in the army serving the duty which every Korean male has to do. The army base is near Jihaeng, Dongducheon so I go there a lot to see him. Almost once a week. It has been almost one and a half years that I have visited him in Jihaeng and I found out that there are so many foreigners (mostly foreign soldiers working in the American army base in Dongducheon) there as well.

I have decided to make a list of some restaurants that I have tried in Jihaeng so far. If you are looking for a restaurant in Jihaeng 🙂 Here we go!

1. Yukggojip (육꼬집)

There are quite a lot of Korean BBQ restaurants in Jihaeng and my favorite is Yukggojip. Their meat is delicious and you can see a fire show as they make it. Every table here has a huge iron grill and it has so much space that you can grill meat, Kimchi, and other vegetables at the same time.

When you order, you first choose which meat you want to eat and then two side dishes out of six which are Kimchi stew (김치찌개), Doenjang stew (된장찌개), steamed egg (계란찜), butter corn (버터콘), stir-fried squid (불오징어볶음), and grilled cheese (시크릿치즈구이). What I chose were butter corn and Kimchi stew. The heart-shaped egg fry is given to every table which a server makes nicely 🙂

After eating Korean BBQ, Bokkeumbab (볶음밥; fried rice) always comes. It is always the best! After eating meat, people usually order a half portion for a person. For example, if you are with one friend, then you would order one portion of Bokkeumbab. If you are with two other friends, you can’t order one and a half portions, so just order two. It is just an example. It’s up to you 😉

Everyone loves Donkatsu and I do too! There are not many Donkatsu restaurants in Jihaeng. I haven’t tried all of them so can’t compare with others in the city but this tasted fine. The basic Donkatsu like the one in the first picture above was good but not the one in the second picture. I would say to go for the basic ones.

Compared to other Donkatsu restaurants in other cities, this is just okay, but it’s fine in Jihaeng. You can order just Donkatsu or a Donkatsu set meal which includes rice, Udon, and Sushi.

If you fell in love with spicy food, this is the place you need to go. It has spicy braised pork/beef. You can choose either pork or beef and the level of spiciness. The medium is 50% which Koreans commonly choose. If you are confident in eating spicy food, try 50% or 70% but over 70%. Over 70% would be too spicy.

I usually order the pork set meal which includes spicy braised pork, rice balls, and steamed egg. Steamed egg helps to reduce the spiciness 🙂

The server will cut the meat stuck to bones nicely into a bite size so that you can easily eat. I love the soybean sprouts in it. After eating the meat, you can order Bokkeumbab which can’t be missed. Spicy food lovers, you should try this.

If you want to try Jokbal, this place is the best for you. I have tried a couple of Jokbal restaurants in Jihaeng and I like this one the most. I usually order half normal Jokbal and half spicy Jokbal. The meat is well-balanced between the fat and the lean meat and it is soft. The Spicy Jokbal is not so spicy that you can’t eat it, but just spicy enough. I would say “deliciously spicy.” It could be too spicy for foreigners though.

This restaurant has Sashimi for a good price but does not give you side dishes (besides lettuce and sauces) or sell drinks. Instead, you need to buy drinks from the store next to the restaurant. The restaurant does not look good and have servers, but you need to serve yourself.

The fish here is fresh and delicious. I can see that they focus more on the quality of the fish than on how the restaurant looks like and how many servers and side dishes there are. That is why they can serve you fresh fish with a good price.

There are many Dakgalbi restaurants in Jihaeng. This restaurant is not highly recommended. The taste of Dakgalbi is fine but not super delicious. You can try it here or in other Dakgalbi restaurants. I will attach the addresses.

Korean-Chinese food is always a good choice 🙂 This restaurant has good Jjambbong, spicy seafood noodle soup. You will enjoy eating a lot of seafood in the soup. You can choose the spiciness between the normal and the more spicy. Tangsuyuk, fried pork, is delicious too. The sauce is sweet and sour.

Other than Jjambbong and Tangsuyuk, they have so many various dishes. You should try it here!

Jihaeng has so many cafes and most of them are franchises. Jerry is a small cafe which has various types of cakes. It also sells different types of desserts like Bingsu (Korean shaved ice) and macarons. They are confident in using healthy, organic ingredients.

Interesting Korean food: Otdak Samgyetang (Sumac Chicken Soup)

I might be the first blogger to write about Otdak. It is boiled chicken soup like Samgyetang, Korean ginseng chicken soup, but different in ingredients. While the normal Samgyetang is boiled in water with other types of Korean herbs, Otdak is with Sumac, which has a little bit of a kind of poison which makes you feel itchy.

When you eat it first, you need to take a medicine which prevents you from rashes. Some people always need to take medicine before eating Otdak and others do not. I took medicine for the first couple times and then quit taking it and I was fine. It depends on the individual.

Why do people eat it if they even have to take medicine? It makes your body warm, helps your digestion, and gives you energy. It is considered a health food in Korea.

Some restaurants give you Otdak with rice and other ingredients stuffed inside of a whole chicken like Samgyetang, and others just give you the chicken like the one in the picture above. The similarity is that they boil the chicken with sumac branches.

Therefore, the color of the soup looks different from the normal Samgyetang.

Look at the soup. It is much darker than that of Samgyetang. The darker the soup is, the more rich and healthy it is. I would say that the soup in the picture above is quite rich.

When you eat, you dip the chicken in salt, just like Samgyetang. Other than the Sumac, it is very similar to Samgyetang.

Fresh Kimchi can’t be missed. I prefer eating it with Kimchi to dipping into salt.

After eating the chicken, the server will put rice in the soup and boil it for several minutes until it gets thicker and becomes porridge. Since the soup is rich, the porridge is rich too, and so delicious.

So interesting, right? Who would put poisonous Sumac in their food for health other than Koreans? However, I personally love this food. Don’t get scared, and give it a try.

Korean Seafood Feast: Hoe course meal

The three sides of Korea are surrounded by the sea and seafood is common here. As you go closer to the sea, seafood is much cheaper of course 🙂 There are many Hoe (회; sashimi) restaurants on the coast and I visited one in Seosan, Chungnam.

You can eat either just Sashimi or a course meal which includes things from appetizers to desserts. My family ordered the course meal. It is truly a feast. You will be amazed.

First of all, the sauces and fresh garlic and chili peppers are set on your table. Hoe restaurants usually give you two types of sauce: soy sauce with wasabi and spicy sour red chili sauce. However, I like to make my own sauce with Ssamjang (red chili pepper paste plus soybean paste) and wasabi.

Then a small portion of Jeonbokjuk (전복죽; Abalone porridge) comes as an appetizer.

Salads, sweet mashed pumpkin, and seaweed soup also come as appetizers. A lot of appetizers, huh? By the way, each of the three appetizers above and other dishes to come are served in one dish, so you and others share it, while the sauce and Jeonbokjuk are served for each individual.

Sauced and grilled eels and seaweed Jeon (전; fried pancake) come next.

I love these. Oh my word. Fresh, raw seafood. Orange sea squirt (멍게; Meong-ge), red “penis fish” (개불; Gae-bul), white abalone (전복; Jeonbok), dark sea cucumber (해삼; Hae-sam), and fresh San-nakji (산낙지; sliced raw octopus).

Yeah, a lot of them sound weird and you might not have heard of them. Which one is the most interesting?

Mayo corn, fried shrimps, and fried fish are following. These crispy fried ones are my mom’s favorite.

Fried Gizzard Shad (전어; Jeon-eo) is not the best for me. It has too many fish bones. The second picture is boiled young Skate with sauce. It is moist and soft.

Then Sushi and braised seafood come. Both are delicious but, at this point, you would practically already be full. My family and I could not finish the braised seafood.

The main dish has not come yet. It will come soon 🙂 Shrimp and lobster prepare the way for the main dish.

And here comes the main dish! It’s flatfish and rockfish sashimi. There is no way that you can finish this sashimi after you had all the food before this. We could not finish even half of this and brought the leftovers back home.

Ok, I am stuffed but Mae-un-tang (매운탕; spicy fish soup) can’t be missed after eating hoe. It is like eating Bokkeumbap (볶음밥; fried rice) after eating Korean BBQ. We just had some soup.

It is a feast 🙂 You must try this amazing course meal. Your belly will be full with great food and your heart full with Korean generosity.
